Start With Better Soil.
Shop potting mixes, garden soils, compost, planting mixes, and soil amendments for containers, raised beds, landscape plantings, and garden projects.
Good Plants Still Need Good Growing Conditions.
Soil affects drainage, air around the roots, nutrient availability, moisture retention, and how well plants establish. The right product depends on what you’re planting and where it’s going.
Containers
Use mixes designed to drain and aerate properly inside pots instead of filling containers with heavy in-ground soil.
Garden Beds
Improve existing beds with compost, organic matter, and amendments chosen for the actual soil problem.
New Plantings
Trees, shrubs, perennials, vegetables, and annuals each have different needs when it comes to drainage and soil preparation.
Potting Mix, Garden Soil & Compost Are Not the Same Thing.
Products are blended for different uses. A mix that performs beautifully in a patio container may be the wrong choice for filling a low spot in the yard, and garden soil usually is not what you want packed into a decorative pot.

What Are You Planting?
Pots & Planters
Use a container mix that balances moisture retention with enough drainage and air around the roots.
Raised Beds
Build a productive root zone with a mix suited to vegetables, herbs, flowers, and the depth of the bed.
Trees & Shrubs
Focus on proper planting depth, drainage, root flare, and the conditions of the existing native soil.
Garden Beds
Add organic matter or amendments when they solve a specific soil issue rather than automatically replacing everything.
More Amendment Is Not Always Better.
Over-amending one planting hole can create a pocket that behaves differently from the surrounding soil. For larger landscape plants, the goal is usually healthy root growth into the native soil — not building a luxury studio apartment for the roots that they never want to leave.
Sandy Soil Can Drain Fast — Sometimes Too Fast.
Coastal soils can vary, but sandy conditions often drain quickly and may hold less moisture and organic matter than gardeners expect. Other sites can have compaction, fill soil, drainage problems, or pockets that stay wet.
Before buying amendments, pay attention to what the site actually does after watering and heavy rain. Fixing the wrong problem is an expensive hobby.
Ask About Bagged & Bulk Materials.
Larger beds, property projects, and contractor needs may call for more material than makes sense to buy one bag at a time. Call (302) 422-9000 to discuss your project and current availability.
